Genuine lapis is an uneven, deep royal blue carrying gold flecks of natural pyrite and often white streaks of calcite. Dyed howlite and reconstituted lapis are flat, uniform blue, and the dye pools darker inside the drill hole. If every bead looks identical, it is almost certainly not natural.
