The honest version of what this mala is

Most "5 mukhi malas" sold online use mixed-quality beads - Indonesian beads sold as Nepali, carved beads next to genuine ones, or shorter strings padded with filler beads. Ours doesn't. Every Panchamukhi mala is hand-strung with 32 lab-verified 5-mukhi beads.

What a 5 Mukhi mala is actually for

This is the universal japa mala - the bead chosen by the Isha Foundation for Sadhguru's iconic mala, and the bead recommended in Shiva Purana for moksha and meditation. Each of the 32 beads is a Panchamukhi (governed by Kalagni Rudra / Shiva, ruled by Brihaspati / Jupiter). The mala is used for chanting "Om Namah Shivaya" (the 5-syllable Panchakshari, naturally aligned with the 5 mukhi), Mahamrityunjaya, Gayatri, or your ishta-devata mantra.

Who this is for

Devotees doing regular japa sadhana (Mahamrityunjaya, Om Namah Shivaya, Gayatri), meditation beginners, yoga practitioners, anyone gifting to a parent or spouse during Sawan, Mahashivratri, Diwali, or gruhapravesh. The Panchamukhi mala is the safe default - universally suitable, no horoscope screening required.

  • Type: 32 + 1 Sumeru bead Rudraksha Mala
  • Mukhi: 5 (Panchamukhi)
  • Origin: Indonesia (Java) - entry-tier japa mala - SGL certified
  • Bead size: 8mm (most popular Indian sizing for both wearing and japa)
  • Sumeru bead: Slightly larger 5-mukhi marking start/end of cycle
  • String: Red silk (re-threadable - replace every 3–4 months)
  • Bija mantra: Om Hreem Namah (per bead)
  • Suggested japa mantras: Om Namah Shivaya - Mahamrityunjaya - Gayatri
  • Deity: Kalagni Rudra (Shiva)
  • Graha: Brihaspati (Jupiter)
  • Day: Thursday (Guruvar) - Monday (Shiva)
  • Certificate: Included - SGL certification (representative beads)
  • 32 + Sumeru beads on red silk - the Vedic completeness of one japa cycle
  • Sadhguru-aligned - Panchamukhi is the universally safe daily japa bead
  • Naturally pairs with Om Namah Shivaya (Panchakshari, 5 syllables × 5 mukhi)
  • Universally suitable - no horoscope screening, all genders, age 14+
  • Linked to Kalagni Rudra (Shiva) and Brihaspati (Jupiter)

Japa hand and finger

Hold the mala in the right hand. Drape it over the middle finger - move beads with the thumb. The index finger does not touch the mala - it represents the ego-self ("aham") to be transcended in practice.

Time and direction

Best time: Brahma Muhurta - the 48-minute window ending ~48 minutes before sunrise (e.g., 4:24–5:12 AM for a 6:00 AM sunrise). Other accepted times: solar noon, sunset (sandhya). Direction: face East or North.

Sumeru rule

Never cross over the sumeru during japa. When you reach it, pause, mentally bow to the guru, and reverse the direction of the mala for the next round of 32. Each completed round is one mala.

Care & storage

Avoid soap, shampoo, perfume, lotion, hot water. Apply a drop of til (sesame) oil monthly to keep beads hydrated. Store in a silk pouch or copper kalash - do not let others touch your japa mala. Re-thread every 3–4 months.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know before you buy.

This mala has 32 lab-verified 5-mukhi (Panchamukhi) beads plus 1 Sumeru (guru) bead - 33 beads total - hand-strung on red silk. The Panchamukhi is the most universal Rudraksh, governed by Kalagni Rudra (Shiva) and Brihaspati (Jupiter); it suits all ages and genders with no horoscope screening. Each bead is SGL certified.

The Sumeru (also called Meru, Guru bead, or 33rd bead) marks the start/end of one japa cycle. Sumeru = Mt. Meru, the cosmic axis, and represents the spiritual teacher (guru). Strict rule: never cross over the sumeru while chanting - when you reach it, pause, mentally bow to the guru, and reverse the mala direction for the next round. Crossing the sumeru is considered disrespectful to the guru lineage.

The most natural pairing is "Om Namah Shivaya" - the 5-syllable Panchakshari mantra resonates with the 5-faced Panchamukhi bead. Other suitable mantras: Mahamrityunjaya ("Om Tryambakam Yajamahe..."), Gayatri Mantra, the bija Om Hreem Namah, or your ishta-devata (chosen-deity) mantra. The mala itself is universal - the mantra is your choice.

Hold the mala in the right hand. Drape it over the middle finger, with the ring finger optionally supporting. Move beads one at a time with the thumb. The index finger does NOT touch the mala - in tradition, the index finger represents the ego-self ("aham"), which the practice is meant to transcend.

Brahma Muhurta - the 48-minute window ending approximately 48 minutes before sunrise (~4:24–5:12 AM for a 6 AM sunrise). This time is considered the most sattvic for spiritual practice. Other accepted times: solar noon and sunset (sandhya). Face East (or North) while chanting - sit on a clean asana of silk, kusha grass, or wool.

Yes - there is no scriptural restriction. Some regional traditions limit use during menstruation or pregnancy, but this is a cultural overlay, not a Shiva Purana / Skanda Purana requirement. Many contemporary teachers (Sadhguru/Isha) explicitly recommend the Panchamukhi mala for women and men equally, ages 14+.

Avoid all chemicals: soap, shampoo, perfume, lotion, hairspray, hot water, chlorinated pool water. Remove before bath, swim, and sweat-heavy workouts. Apply a drop of til (sesame) oil monthly to maintain seed hydration. Re-thread every 3–4 months on red silk or cotton. Store in a silk pouch or copper kalash - ideally only you handle your japa mala.

Both - many devotees wear the mala continuously around the neck or wrist, removing it only for shower, sleep (optional), and chanting. Others reserve the mala exclusively for japa and store it in a silk pouch between sessions. Both are traditionally accepted. If worn daily, follow the care rules and re-energise with smoke after any cremation/funeral exposure.
